Harold Parsons History

The Maffra Sale Motorcycle Club are proud to conduct an Annual Memorial Event to honour a great Australian Motorcycle Champion Harold Parson.

Harold set 24 world records on a triangular course between Sale, Stratford, and Maffra. He broke all records from 300 miles (480 km.) to 1100 miles (1760kms.) and from 6 to 24 hours riding a 600cc. Indian Motorcycle.  Harold won many championships in four states of Australian.

Some of Harold’s Records were:

1916             100 miles in 95 minutes on a 7.5 hp Indian Motorcycle

                   200 miles in 200 minutes.

                   10  miles in 7 minutes.

1918             Indian Motorcycle and Sidecar from Melbourne to Sydney

                   In 21 hours.

1919             Indian Motorcycle and Sidecar  he broke the solo record from

Adelaide to Melbourne in 19 hours 50 minutes.

1920             In August he clocked up 1114 miles (1782km) in 24 hours, his

actual  riding time was 22 and a half hours, a remarkable

performance  on gravel roads lapping at 26 minutes per lap

during daylight and 28 minutes per lap in the dark with poor

                   lighting

Harold Parson died at Epping on the 15th.May 1921 when he

collided with a horse on a Sunday morning test run.

He was only 28 years old.

The Maffra Sale Motorcycle Club and the City of Sale created a Memorial Park, opposite the Sale Showground where the 1920 record started. A commemorative plaque is set in an 11 tonne granite rock.

In 1982 Ian Kennedy devised the format for the Harold Parson Memorial Run that is held in March each year

The event is very popular because it is run as a reliability ride and not a race.

Harold Parsons Memorial Reliability Run - Saturday March 28, 2009

As we go into the 27th. year of running this event, there will be a slight change to the format of previous years, it will be run the same as last year, with a few less controls.

It will still be a Reliability Run where riders choose your own speed that they are comfortable to ride at on an arrowed course, on main and local sealed roads.

Various checks points are set out on the course to see that you maintain the speed that you have chosen.

It is a test of reliability  NOT A RACE  so do not select a speed that is too fast which will not allow you time to enjoy the ride or the country you are travelling through.

The speed you select is your AVERAGE speed, which includes slowing down for corners, main roads, hills and other road users.

IT IS NOT YOUR CRUISING SPEED.

Riders are required to obey all traffic rules and regulations.

The passengers also have a section for them on the day where they are asked for answers to questions that are found on the way.

The ride will be approximately 100 miles long with extra time allowed for a fuel stop also extra time allowed whenever you go through a town or restricted area speed zone.

NOTE – If you are on a gravel road, you are lost.

This year we will have secret controls along the course, and time cards will only need to be signed at the start of the day, in and out at lunch time and at the end of the ride, this  eliminates  the use of some control people which have been getting harder to find every year.

Dept of Sustainability & Environment Survey

WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK!

As part of of the trail bike 'Ride For Tomorrow' Initiative funded by the Victorian Government, The department of sustainability and environment (DSE) has engaged the research company instinct & reason to engage with trail bike riders to hear from riders their views on a range of issues relating to the bike use of public land.

We are seeking to do this in two ways.

1. FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIONS- In a group with nine other riders, talk with an independent researcher in a structured group discussion to explore the views and thoughts of riders. The focus group discussions will be held in the evening and will go for approx 1.5 hours, with a cash incentive paid to those who attend ($75.00 tax free). There will be 11 focus group discussions held in late January; in inner Melbourne , in the eastern suburbs, in the outer Western Suburbs and in Regional Victoria (Traralgon, Alexandra and Ballarat).

2. Online Survey- An online survey will be hosted online in late February to seek trail bike rider feedback on a range of issues. The survey will take about 15-20 minutes to complete and those completing the survey have the chance to win $150.00 gift certificate to Myers.

If you are interested in registering to participate in one of the focus group discussion or in the online survey, please email Claire Oehme at instinct and reason- coehme@instinctandreason.com or telephone 02 9283 2233 to reserve your place. We are seeking at least 500 trail bike riders to participate in the online survey but places in the focus group discussions are limited to ten people per focus group so please book early!

Please feel free to pass this information onto other trail bike riders who may be interested in participating.

Your input and views as riders are important to the success of this initiative- so thanks for giving it your consideration.
